Drag in Amsterdam

In Drag in Amsterdam ontdek je hoe drag zich ontwikkelde in de stad. Van optredens in theaters en cabaret tot de underground clubs van de jaren 80 en de dragscene rond Pride. Ook evenementen zoals Hartjesdag op de Zeedijk, drag bingo’s, de Drag Olympics en Superball in Paradiso komen aan bod. Persoonlijke verhalen van dragartiesten brengen deze geschiedenis dichtbij.

De tentoonstelling gaat ook in op de rol van drag in activisme. Tijdens de aidscrisis van de jaren 80 en 90 gebruikten dragartiesten humor, performances en benefietshows om aandacht te vragen voor zichtbaarheid, acceptatie en veilige seks.

In de Schatkamer is daarnaast een uitgebreide Claim Your Space-presentatie te zien over Stichting Hellun Zelluf, opgericht door dragartiest Hellun Zelluf en haar dragfamilie. De stichting speelde een belangrijke rol in de strijd tegen aids in Amsterdam. Met humor, creativiteit en benefietshows gingen zij stigma’s tegen en gaven zij voorlichting over veilige seks. Aan de hand van uniek archiefmateriaal ontdek je hoe drag en activisme samenkwamen in de strijd voor zichtbaarheid, acceptatie en steun tijdens de aidscrisis.

Drag in Amsterdam follows the development of drag culture in the city. From theatre and cabaret performances to the underground clubs of the 1980s and the drag scene surrounding Pride. The exhibition also highlights events such as Hartjesdag on the Zeedijk, drag bingo nights, the Drag Olympics and Superball at Paradiso. Personal stories from drag artists bring this history to life.

The exhibition also explores the role of drag in activism. During the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, drag artists used humour, performances and benefit shows to advocate for visibility, acceptance and safer sex education.

In the Treasure Room, an extended Claim Your Space presentation focuses on Stichting Hellun Zelluf, founded by drag artist Hellun Zelluf and her drag family. The foundation played an important role in the fight against AIDS in Amsterdam. Through humour, creativity and benefit shows, they challenged stigma and provided safer sex education. Using unique archival materials, visitors discover how drag and activism came together in the fight for visibility, acceptance and support during the AIDS crisis.
